Survivors of the Jenova Incident, Part IV

In the wake of the Jenova Incident several months ago, there has been an enormous amount of effort expended by governments and the public (both Genide and otherwise) to assemble the personnel records of those stationed at the doomed facility and aboard the Optimus, a Genide battleship that was destroyed in orbit around the asteroid. Ostensibly this work has been carried out to establish exactly what events led to the loss of the facility and to contact the families of the deceased. In reality, the various organizations seem more interested in establishing the nature of the research (and the results) that was being carried out at the previously unknown facility on Jenova. Additionally, it is clear from recently leaked classified reports that the Genide government is exceptionally interested in determining the current whereabouts of the survivors. We are continuing to gather information and report on the individuals that are rumored to have survived.

According to the leaked documents, one of the potential survivors is Cael Bionassa, a biochemical researcher who seems to have slipped from the public records over ten years ago. While the surviving records from the Jenova Incident clearly establish his presence at the facility, Bionassa's exact role has been difficult to piece together. Progress on his dossier has been slow since communication and file fragments regarding Bionassa often refer to him as "Bion", and sometime even "Doc" (the latter nickname has been especially troublesome as there were other scientists and medical doctors stationed at the facility, and it has been difficult to rule out if "Doc" was used on occasion for other personnel).

The public records of Bionassa (born in Exon 376) do not give any indication of anything unusual about his background. His records portray an individual with high intelligence and excellent learning skills. By the time he was twenty-five, Bionassa had obtained his PhD in biochemistry and seemed to be enroute to becoming a very prominent scientist. However, in Exon 402 all public records regarding Bionassa cease. Given his presence at Jenova, it is believed that he was recruited by the same (and unknown) organization that operated the Jenova facility.

The leaked documents indicate that details on Bionassa's research at the facility are fragmented and the specifics are unknown, but it appears that he was involved in the genetic engineering of a new breed of Genides, at least at first. From what has been extracted from the Jenova files, Bionassa was reassigned to the Optimus several years prior to the Jenova Incident. While stationed on the Optimus, he appears to have been in charge of monitoring and studying the effects of the intense combat training on the new Genides. His close working proximity to the new Genides and his general interest in their health appears to have garnered their respect, and this appears to have led to his nickname "Doc" (unlike the Jenova communication files, the communication fragments from the Optimus containing the name "Doc" appear to refer to Bionassa exclusively).

If these details are in fact correct, it would seem that Bionassa's reassignment to the Optimus was fortuitous, as the only survivors appear to be from those stationed on the battleship. There is no indication of any personnel at the Jenova facility surviving the attack. Nonetheless, it is difficult to determine if Bionassa did indeed escape the attack, as the survivors that are rumored to have arrived at Spire Station following the Jenova Incident are currently at large.

There have been sightings of an individual on Spire Station matching Bionassa's description, although witnesses report this individual usually disembarking from a Genide fighter, and Bionassa is not known to have any combat training. In one unconfirmed instance, a witness supposedly observed Bionassa conversing with a Genide whom he reportedly greeted as "Ares". It cannot be confirmed if this individual was the same Ares that was in charge of the Genide training aboard the Optimus battleship (as mentioned in surviving Optimus files) before the Jenova Incident. However, given Bionassa's supposed role in monitoring the Genide training it can be assumed that he worked closely with Ares on the Optimus. If they did indeed both survive, Bionassa's continued association with Ares would not be surprising.
